On the 27th of October 2022, I took the stage at GLASS's showcase at The Record Factory, Glasgow to perform my first ever stand-up set.
Stand-up comedy has been something I've wanted to try for a long time but just never got around to or never felt like I had a safe space to try and test different material. I would describe my comedic style as inherently storytelling with jokes here and there.
I was obviously nervous to get up there but being on stage was not new to me. I had acted a lot in my teenage years and even at school I had delivered many presentations to over 150 students. But being funny and being myself was a new kind of performance for me. I decided that I knew the story really well and I was just going to be confident. Even if I messed up, the confidence would mask any faults.
I got laughs in the right places although some of the audience laughed when I didn't expect them to or didn't laugh when I thought I'd said a good joke. Regardless, the feeling was exhilarating and performing for me is addictive. I had truly missed it.
Hopefully, I will have many more opportunities to perform again in the incoming future!
